While rumors about the Nintendo Switch 2’s specs and release continue to make the rounds, one confirmed feature has sparked particular excitement: backward compatibility. This means that the Switch 2 won't just play Switch games, but will also breathe new life into a library of Wii U games, marking a historic first for Nintendo consoles.

For the first time in Nintendo’s history, a selection of games will be playable across three consecutive generations of consoles. This is as a result of the Switch 2’s backwards compatibility, as well as the fact that many Wii U titles were ported to the original Switch.

Resurrecting a Hidden Gem: The Wii U's Second Chance

Despite its innovative gamepad and some stellar titles, the Wii U was a commercial flop, selling only 13.56 million units. This meant that many of its gems, like Super Mario 3D World and Pikmin 3, went largely unnoticed.

However, the Switch is changing that narrative and with its massive success (over 140 million units sold), it has offered these games a second chance.

With the Switch 2's backward compatibility, these resurrected titles will reach an even wider audience, finally getting the recognition they deserve.

A Leap Forward

While the Switch offered Wii U games through ports, the Switch 2 takes things a step further. Instead of simply re-releasing games, backward compatibility allows players to seamlessly enjoy their existing Wii U library on the new console. This is a huge win for fans who invested in the Wii U and don't want to repurchase their favorites.

A Treasure Trove of Titles and What to Expect

The list of Wii U games making the jump to the Switch 2 is already impressive. Fan-favorites like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe are all confirmed. And it's not just Nintendo's own titles; third-party gems like LEGO City: Undercover and Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove are also making the leap.

With over 36 confirmed Wii U titles already on the list, and more potentially on the way, the Switch 2 promises a rich and diverse library right out of the gate.

Given the timeframe taken to develop new games of high quality that match with today's gaming standards, the Switch 2's backwards compatibility will give players access to a huge library of games while they wait for new titles to be released. This is a benefit we see with the current generation of consoles, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, which haven't had as many exclusive releases.

Closing Note

The Switch 2's embrace of backward compatibility signals a positive shift in the gaming industry. It demonstrates a commitment to accessibility, allowing gamers to enjoy their favorite titles across multiple console generations. It also plays a crucial role in game preservation, ensuring that these gems from the Wii U era aren't lost to time.

While it's unlikely that this level of backward compatibility will extend to future Nintendo consoles, the Switch 2's commitment to bringing Wii U games to three generations is a remarkable feat, and a welcome one for gamers everywhere.
