After the release of Fatal Fury 3 last week, SNK’s ACA NeoGeo release system has set its sights on the classic 2D side-scroller action game Sengoku 2. Debuting in 1993, this samurai-themed beat-em-up harkens back to the likes of Double Dragon or even Contra, with a big focus on utilising swordplay as your primary means of defence against the opposing samurai hordes.
Sengoku 2’s story tells the tale of a warrior summoned into the world by a shrine princess as he goes on a quest through time, spanning various periods of history beyond just feudal Japan on his hunt for the primary antagonist of the game: The Dark Monarch.
Gameplay-wise, you know what you’re in for if you’ve played 90s side-scroller beat-em-ups. You’ll traverse a 2D plane as you’re approached by army after army of endless goons, and your job is simple, though often not easy. You’re here to beat the ever-living snot out of all of these fellas, and you’ll use a fair few different abilities to do so as well.
However, your primary means of combat will be the katana wielded by the protagonist, slicing and dicing your way through history on this quest of yours. These types of games actually lend themselves really well to mobile, as the controls are usually just a simple left, right, jump, and hit button. It’s a simple gameplay loop and, mechanically speaking, isn’t all that deep, but sometimes you just wanna beat up some guys without all the bells and whistles.
As for the ACA release, as is per usual, you can expect all the modern features you need like gamepad support, save states, enhanced graphics, and an easy-to-use touch control scheme as well.
If you’re looking to relive the glory days and give Sengoku 2 a shot, you can purchase it at the links below for $3.99. In the meantime, check out the full ACA NeoGeo library for more retro goodness.
