2024 has been an exciting year for gamers, especially lovers of First Person Shooter (FPS) games. For FFP games, the most important thing is immersion. These types of games put you in the hero’s shoes, and let you find out, albeit virtually, what it's like to be the one gunning down the opponents and clearing those missions.

There is a mesmerizing lineup of games available out there, some of which will definitely keep you glued to the edge of your seat. However, you can't possibly play every single FPS to find out which is the best. There's just too many of them and even if you had 24 hours a day to try out a new game, it would still be a waste of money, time, and energy which could be put to better use.

This is why we've gone ahead to check out and curate 10 of the best FPS games for you. This list is quite diverse — it features FPS titles from science fiction to other more realistic categories — and we know you'll enjoy playing them.

10. Hunt: Showdown

This is one of the most intriguing FPS titles you'll ever come across. It is unique in the sense that the actual players are not your targets, instead they're nothing more than obstacles. Your actual mission is to hunt and kill dangerous monsters lurking around dark buildings. Then you must retrieve the loot and successfully bring it back to the extraction point.

Now, here's the catch: there are other teams of players who are trying to achieve the same goal, and there isn't enough loot to go around. Inevitably, you will have to fight the other teams if you want to survive and complete the mission.

9. Overwatch 2

Overwatch 2, an FPS title launched in 2023 by Blizzard Entertainment, is free to play, and designed to be both the sequel and replacement to the shooter Overwatch, which was released in 2016. In Overwatch 2, players are split into two teams, and each team must choose a hero from a list of 41 characters.

Characters are pooled into ‘damage’, ‘support’, and ‘class’ categories, and are responsible for offensive efforts, healing and buffing, as well as creating space for the team. There are a number of additional features in the release but like its predecessor, it primarily focuses on player versus player (PvP) combats in different modes and maps. Matches can be competitive or casual.

8. Doom: Eternal

Id Software developed and released this game in 2020 as the sequel to Doom (2016). It is the seventh title in the Doom series and can be played on PlayStation 4 and 5, Stadia, Windows, Xbox One, as well as Nintendo Switch.

The story follows the events of the 2016 game, with the Doom Slayer once more on a mission to stop Hell's consumption of Earth and foil the alien Khan Maykr's pledge to destroy humanity. The game has a single player campaign as well as a multiplayer mode called Battlemode. Here, you can play as Doom Slayer or as a Demon and fight until one defeats the other.

7. Fortnite

Here's our advice for you before you read this: first of all, forget everything you've heard about Fortnite, because this right here is a brand new game title. And if you're going to base your judgment on the crazy crossovers being passed around on the internet, then you might as well not play this game.

Although it's not strictly a FPS title, what Fortnite offers in shooter gameplay is still some of the very best you can ask for. And with these new modes that have been added? You're simply in for a ride!

6. Destiny 2

Destiny 2 has taken a number of years to prove its reputation as an exhilarating FPS game and that's why it's on our list of top 10 FPS titles to play in 2024. It's like a modernized version of what Bungie achieved with the Halo Series.

One of its strongest points is the constant stream of updates that players get, which gives them more reasons to keep playing. It also helps that the base experience is free, which means you can check it out for yourself without spending a buck, before deciding you want to go further. And if you do make the decision to get into it, there's hundreds of hours worth of amazing FPS gameplay to enjoy, along with insane art direction.

5. Rainbow Six Siege

First launched all the way back in 2015, it's a testament to how super amazing this FPS title is that it is still going strong in 2024. It's tense, it's tactical, and even though you might not immediately sense it, it has a deep storyline to boot. You're free to choose from the many selection of operators (more than 70 actually), and of course, each one gives you a different playing style, unique features and loadout.

Rainbow Six Siege is more of a multiplayer shooter, but that takes nothing away from its FPS mechanics. It is tight and precise and the game itself is cheap so you can pick it up and dive into it on free weekends.

4. Counter Strike

Counter Strike might only be available on PC, but if you ask any gamer who is serious about accuracy and competition, they'll tell you this is the one. Basically, it's an updated version of CS:GO but some major improvements have been made on the technical side.

It's no surprise that the previous installment has produced many esports professionals, because the level of tactical acumen needed to navigate this title is something you can't find in any casual FPS. This will definitely test your limit, so if you love tactical titles and you're looking for a challenge, here's your guy.

3. Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0

Call Of Duty, or COD, has cemented its place in gaming lore. It remains one of those titles that has successfully transcended the core gaming world and become a constant mention in pop culture. However, the series has continued to push boundaries with each release, and that's the first thing that hits you when you play Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0.

As a successor to the original installment developed by Infinity Ward and Raven Software, it stays on the familiar yet addictive path of the last-man-standing combat, but several new features means you can't ever get bored or see it as almost the same. It not only offers cross-platform play, Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 also allows integrated progression with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, and the upcoming Black Ops 6.

The maps are expensive and you can engage in intense firefights and compete for survival in a shrinking zone. You can even respawn for a second chance in the iconic Gulag. The developers have added unpredictable chaos with the introduction of mechanics like the multi-circle collapse while popular modes such as Resurgence and Plunder ensures you never run out of a challenge. The gunplay is as realistic as it gets, the action is fast-paced and the title is a must-play for every FPS enthusiast.

2. Halo Infinite

The Halo Series has already achieved its status as an all-time title that any FPS enthusiast should check out, but the Halo Infinite (the sixth installment of the series) is one title that has taken the FPS gaming sphere by storm in 2024. Halo Infinite delivers on the reputation already put in place by previous installments of the series, but this one goes a step further to combine Halo action with modern, open-world elements.

The title, developed by 343 and published by Xbox Game Studios, sees the player return to the legendary role of the iconic human supersoldier, Master Chief. In this installment, Master Chief finds himself on the mysterious Forerunner ringworld, Zeta Halo, where he is tasked with taking on the Banished, a resolute alien Mercenary group.

In the Halo Infinite campaign mode, you are free to explore the exciting terrains of Zeta Halo, using a mix of weapons, vehicles and tools such as the Grappleshot. In the open world side missions, you can capture  Forward Operating Bases (FOBs), eliminate high-value Banished targets, rescue scattered Marine squads, and destroy enemy propaganda towers.

Your rewards? More points (Valor) to summon vehicles and weapons. The multiplayer campaigns are even more beautiful. Here, you have modes like deathmatch, capture the flag, and the adrenaline-fueled Big Team Battle, with up to 24 players. There's also a training mode to help you get a hang of things if you're new to the title.

Released in 2021 after some delays, it has since been a success story with amazing reviews across the internet. Like Apex Legends, the title is free-to-play and similarly combines open world exploration with subtle, traditionally designed halo missions. If the idea was to achieve both nostalgia and freshness, then that aim was achieved and surpassed.

1. Apex Legends

Apex Legends

Apex Legends has completely revolutionized the battle royale genre of FPS games with its unique combination of fast-paced action and hero-based gameplay. These qualities have made the game continue its insane run as one of the top titles to play in 2024, despite the fact that it was first released in 2019 for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 4.

Gameplay is one area where the FPS title really excels. If you function best as a lone shooter, you could play the Solo mode. But if you prefer to hang with friends, the Duos or Trios modes are all about forming squads of two and three players respectively, which means teamwork and coordination is super important. You could play the standard battle royale mode—where as many as 20 three-person squads or 30 two-person squads drop onto an ever-shrinking map that forces you to either keep it moving or find yourself outside the play area.

And when that happens, you're just as good as dead. The last team standing wins the round. There's also the super intense Arena mode where players form into 3 player squads go head-to-head against another squad in a 3v3 team deathmatch. The winner is decided over a series of rounds. In order to win, your team must have at least 3 points and be 3 points ahead of the closest challenger. These are all cool features but not as cool as the nonverbal ping system that allows players to communicate without voice chat, which makes the game really accessible.

In 2024, Apex Legends continues to evolve. With over 25 Legends available, each with its own unique features and classified into one of five roles—Assault, Skirmisher, Recon, Controller, and Support—there’s a character to suit every playstyle, from aggressive rushers to careful tacticians. Plus, the Season 20 update has introduced MOBA-like upgradeable skill trees giving you the chance to enhance your Legend’s abilities throughout a match. This new feature, alongside frequent map updates and fresh cosmetics, keeps Apex Legends exciting and ever-changing. You really should check this title out if you love FPS games.

Final Notes

These titles are undoubtedly ten of the best FPS games making the waves in 2024. They've passed every test you can think about, but it doesn't mean you will be interested in all of them. However, we can guarantee that you will be interested in most of them. So, what are you waiting for?
